It is the goal of the Shelter Island Highway Department to work with homeowners to clean out encroaching/overgrown vegetation. The Town owns approximately 10-20 feet from the edge of the blacktop roadway to a homeowner's property line (depending on the property.) This is called a right-of-way. Right-of-ways serve the following purposes:
- Vehicle Parking (including Emergency Vehicles)
- Snow Placement Areas While Plowing Roads
- Temporary Debris Placement Areas During Storm Cleanup
- Access for Utility Companies
